A Compassionate Guide for a Final, Loving Goodbye
What if the final act of love for your pet could be one of profound peace, not panic?
Why I Wrote Furry Mortals
I remember the exact moment the world changed. It wasn’t when the veterinarian gave us the terminal diagnosis, and it wasn’t even during that final, quiet breath in the clinic. It was the moment I walked back to my car, reached into the backseat to move a blanket, and felt the cold, metal weight of an empty leash.
I wrote Furry Mortals because I realized that as pet parents, we are given a mountain of information on how to start a life together, but we are left in a vacuum of silence when it comes to ending one.
I wrote this book for the person pacing the floor at 3:00 AM, wondering if tonight is the night. I wrote it for the advocate who feels like they are "giving up" when they are actually giving the greatest gift of all: mercy. I wanted to create a roadmap through the "Missing Chapter" of veterinary medicine—one that doesn't just look at heart rates, but at the Mortgage of the Heart.
They give us a lifetime of unconditional presence, and in return, we owe them a departure that is as dignified as their arrival. I wrote this book so that the next time you have to walk the "Hardest Walk," you don't have to do it in the dark.
I’ve held the empty leash, and I’ve learned that while the silence is heavy, it is also full of the peace we fought so hard to give them.
